Herb Lubalin on Creation of PBS Logo

We’ve all been there. Working with many rounds of client changes to get a design just right. In this video, Herb Lubalin discusses the process behind the design of the PBS Logo. It’s interesting how many changes were made to get to the iconic logo… the initial designs are so 70’s! The end result? A compromise between his vision and their vision to get something that’s endured. We’re still talking about it 40 years later.

The logo went through a few more updates over the years, the biggest one being the update by Chermayeff & Geismar in 1984. They took the “P” face and turned it to the right after all, creating a very well-known mark that’s still around today.

Amazing how slipme and how effective. The only other thing that surprises me here is that this is actually one of those rare instances I would want to click on a Like button somewhere, but there is none.
